Weeks 1 & 2: Character Design
In these sessions, we explored the fundamentals of character design, focusing on three essential principles:
- Iconicity: Designing characters with strong, recognizable silhouettes.
- Simplicity: Ensuring each character’s design serves a clear purpose.
- Uniqueness: Creating memorable characters that stand apart visually.
Key design techniques emphasized included:
- Emphasis and Contrast: Enhancing visual elements to make characters stand out.
- Harmony: Maintaining a visual hierarchy where all design components complement one another.
- Expressions and Poses: Effectively communicating a character’s personality through clear and distinct visual cues.

Adobe Illustrator
We were introduced to Adobe Illustrator, starting with the fundamental tools required to create a character using basic shapes. Some key tools covered include:
- Move Tool (V): Enables the movement of selected objects.
- Pen Tool (P): Allows the creation of lines and shapes, with customizable curves using handles.
- Ellipse Tool (L): Used for creating circles.
- Rectangle Tool (M): Used to draw rectangles.
- Reflect Tool (O): Mirrors selected objects along an axis.
- Gradient Tool (G): Blends two or more colors seamlessly within an object.

Week 3:
- **Pathfinder**: Used to unite, divide, or intersect shapes, allowing for the creation of more complex designs from simple geometric elements.
- **Shape Builder**: A tool that lets you combine or erase parts of overlapping shapes, making it easy to create new, customized forms from simpler ones.

We were assigned the challenge of designing a character by utilizing a set of predefined shapes. The objective was to craft a distinctive character by skillfully combining and adjusting these elements within a set of design parameters.
VORMATOR CHALLENGES EXERCISE
Week 1: Introduction to Vormator Challenge
Overview:
The first week introduced us to the Vormator Challenge, a creative exercise aimed at developing core skills in vector illustration and character design. The challenge presented us with a set of pre-defined geometric shapes, and we were tasked with designing a unique character using only these shapes, without altering their original proportions. This exercise was designed to enhance our understanding of proportion, balance, and composition, while familiarizing us with the basic tools in Adobe Illustrator.
Objective:
The goal was to use the Vormator shapes creatively, exploring how these simple elements could be combined and manipulated to form a cohesive character. This task encouraged us to think critically about design constraints, fostering creativity within limitations.

Exercise: Vormator Challenge Process
Concept Development:
Before diving into Illustrator, I began by sketching a rough concept for my character. I explored various ways to combine the Vormator shapes to create a distinctive silhouette. This initial stage allowed me to visualize how I could transform the basic shapes into something unique while adhering to the challenge's rules.
Illustration Process:
1. Shape Selection and Arrangement:
Using the pre-defined Vormator shapes, I arranged them to form the foundation of my character. I focused on maintaining the integrity of the shapes, ensuring no stretching or distortion, while experimenting with rotation, reflection, and duplication.
2. Combining Shapes:
To create new forms, I relied on the Pathfinder and Shape Builder tools. These tools allowed me to merge, subtract, and intersect shapes, crafting more complex elements from the basic forms. This was especially helpful in developing intricate details like facial features and clothing.
3. Adding Color and Shadows:
I then moved on to adding color and shading. By using gradients and solid fills, I added depth and texture to the character, bringing it to life. The **Pathfinder** tool also helped me in creating shadows, giving the character a sense of dimension while still working within the constraints of the Vormator shapes.
4. Refining Proportion and Balance:
Throughout the process, I focused on ensuring that the character’s overall design was balanced. This required adjusting the size and placement of shapes to create harmony and ensure that the character appeared cohesive and visually appealing.

Haetee – Guardian of the Realms
Haetee is a majestic, lion-like creature with a mane of flame and eyes that glow with ancient power. Known as a protector of the realms, Haetee fiercely defends the balance between chaos and order. Its presence inspires awe, standing as a symbol of unwavering justice and strength.

Challenges and Solutions:
Working within the strict limitations of the Vormator shapes was both a challenge and an opportunity to push creative boundaries. The most difficult aspect was finding ways to add personality to the character without distorting the original shapes. However, by combining shapes strategically and experimenting with shadow and color, I was able to create a character that was both unique and aligned with the design guidelines.

Reflection:
This first exercise was an invaluable introduction to the principles of vector design and the capabilities of Adobe Illustrator. It taught me how to think creatively within constraints, refine my sense of proportion and balance, and develop a more methodical approach to design. The Vormator Challenge set the foundation for the skills I’ll continue to develop throughout the course.
