LECTURES

week 8

online class

week 9

This week, Mr. Max guided us through Task 3 by explaining essential typography concepts at each table. He emphasized the importance of understanding the anatomy of type, highlighting seven key elements: baseline, x-height, ascender, descender, uppercase, lowercase, and cap height. He stressed that all letters should align on the same baseline and noted that uppercase letters can either match the height of lowercase letters or be twice as tall. This knowledge will help us create accurate fonts for Task 3.

WORK PROCESS

-REFERENCE & RESEARCH

decided to design the fonts with futuristic and sharp edge fonts.

SKETCHES

class exercise

after the rough design was decided i proceed to work on digitalisation of the fonts
(Mr.Max told gave me a feedback the size should be bigger because the letters are capital letter)

the size were corrected and the shapes were also fixed as every font needs to be same

FINAL DESIGN

FONT LAB

after finalizing the designs i proceed to move them to fontlab.

FEEDBACK

Week 8

  • This week was dedicated to Independent Learning.

Week 9

  • I showed Mr. Max my sketches of the font design, and he chose one that he found interesting. He advised me to further develop and refine the chosen design before moving on to digitization. Once I completed the updated sketch, I began working on the digital version.

Week 10

  • I presented my digitized font design in Adobe Illustrator to Mr. Max. He suggested increasing the size since my fonts are uppercase and emphasized that the design and shapes should maintain consistency, such as aligning angles and ensuring uniform font sizes.

Week 11

  • Mr. Max taught me how to use FontLab and explained the process of transferring designs from Adobe Illustrator while preserving the shapes. He also showed me how to adjust kerning and sizing in FontLab.

Week 12

  • I missed the physical class due to not feeling well and couldn’t receive feedback during that session.

Reflections

Experience
Doing this task was such a cool experience for me because I finally got to design my own font and even use it. At first, it felt like a really long project, but I actually enjoyed it since I learned so many new things. I figured out how to build my font in Adobe Illustrator step by step and also got to try out FontLab for the first time, which was super interesting. I had no idea before how fonts were made, so seeing my designs come to life was exciting. Even though I didn’t finish all the letters before the FontLab trial ended, I still managed to complete the required ones for submission. Honestly, it felt great finishing it, and seeing my classmates' fonts made it even more inspiring.

The first part of this project, which was sketching and getting the concept right, was the hardest for me. It was difficult to decide on the direction I wanted to go with my font. Another challenge was making sure the shapes of all the letters were consistent. Keeping the design uniform across all letters, like the angles and sizes, was tricky but important.

Observations
Throughout this project, I noticed how much the techniques we learned in earlier tasks really helped. Using different ways to create shapes in Illustrator made things easier, and I’ve gotten so much faster at using the tools. It was a bit tough since FontLab was a new software for me, so I needed some time to become familiar with it.

Findings
It was very nice and cool to see the exported .ttf type file and that I could use my own font on my computer was very interesting. At first, when I got the brief for Task 3, I thought it was going to be challenging since designing a font and using new software like FontLab seemed difficult. But after finishing it, I realized that making a font is not as hard as I thought and was actually a fun and rewarding task.
