Reflection
Experience
Creating this stop-motion animation was a completely new but exciting experience for me. At first, I planned to make a human figure out of soft clay, but it quickly became clear that it was too difficult to sculpt and keep upright. I decided to pivot and create an easier character, a cute, simple caterpillar without legs which allowed the animation to focus more on storytelling and movement rather than complex character design. This change not only made production smoother, but also helped me focus on the concept inspired by the Tarot card the hermit
Process & Challenges
One of the biggest challenges was taking hundreds of still frames (5 per second for a 35-second video), making small adjustments each time. It required a lot of patience and careful planning. I used a stop-motion app to capture the frames and later edited the animation using. Adding a title and ending credits helped me give the short film a complete and professional feel.
Observation & Learning
Through this project, I realized how important simplicity is in stop-motion animation, especially for beginners. Choosing the right character and having a strong theme helped guide the whole creative process. I also learned about frame timing, lighting, and consistency between shots. The Tarot card theme gave me a unique storytelling angle, showing the journey of the caterpillar searching for its purpose, just like the Hermit seeks wisdom in solitude.
Conclusion
This task taught me the value of adapting and problem-solving in creative projects. I gained hands-on experience in stop-motion, improved my editing skills, and learned to express a symbolic narrative through simple visuals. I hope to explore more animation techniques in the future and develop stronger stories using different materials and tools.
