Design Principles
Task 2:
Table of Contents
1. Task Recap
This task requires students to analyse the design work selected in Task 1 by examining the visual elements and design principles used in the artwork. The purpose of this analysis is to understand how the design functions visually and conceptually. Students must observe aspects such as the composition, placement of elements, use of colour, hierarchy, and the overall effectiveness of the design.
Through this process, students develop a deeper understanding of how design principles operate within real design works. Based on this analysis, students are also required to generate three new design ideas inspired by the selected artwork. These ideas should demonstrate the application of design principles learned in the module.
2. Visual Analysis
The album cover of Power Andre 99 by Silica Gel features a striking and experimental design that combines mechanical imagery with a surreal human-like figure. The most dominant element in the composition is the robotic woman's face, rendered in high-contrast black and white. This strong contrast immediately draws the viewer’s attention and creates a clear focal point within the piece. The face appears expressionless and machine-like, which enhances the futuristic and industrial mood of the album cover.
Surrounding the central face are multiple mechanical hands reaching outward. Their placement creates a sense of movement, as if they are emerging from behind the face or reaching toward the viewer. This directional flow encourages the eye to travel across the composition rather than staying fixed on a single point. The hands are repeated in similar shapes and forms, reinforcing rhythm and contributing to a visual pattern that ties the composition together.
The background presents an industrial environment filled with textured mechanical parts, pipes, and sharp metallic elements. These details support the overall cyber-industrial tone of the design. The dark, complex background contrasts against the clean white tones of the robotic face, which strengthens the emphasis and makes the central figure appear even more isolated and dominant. This contrast not only establishes hierarchy but also brings depth into the composition.
Repetition is also visible in the industrial textures and fragmented geometric forms that appear throughout the artwork. These repeated elements create unity and visual consistency despite the chaotic appearance of the composition. The balance between repeated mechanical shapes and the central figure produces a structured flow, preventing the layout from feeling completely random.
Overall, the design uses contrast, emphasis, movement, and repetition effectively to communicate the band’s experimental identity. The combination of human-like features with mechanical forms creates tension and visual intrigue, encouraging viewers to interpret the relationship between the figure and the industrial environment.
1. Emphasis
In the album cover, the central character/graphic element is the main focal point. The bright colors and large scale make the viewer immediately look at this area first. This strong focal point helps communicate the surreal and experimental concept of the album.
2. Contrast
The cover uses strong color contrast such as bright neon tones against darker backgrounds. This makes the shapes and typography stand out clearly and creates a dynamic and energetic look that reflects the band’s psychedelic rock style.
3. Balance
Instead of placing elements evenly on both sides, the visual elements are arranged in a more experimental layout. Despite being uneven, the composition still feels visually stable because the sizes and colors are balanced across the design.
4. Movement
The curved shapes, digital textures, and flowing lines create a sense of motion. These elements lead the viewer’s eye from the main figure to the surrounding graphics and text, giving the artwork a futuristic and energetic feeling.
5. Unity
The color palette, digital textures, and surreal graphics work together to create a cohesive visual identity. This unity reinforces the experimental and psychedelic aesthetic associated with the music.
Ideation (3 Sketch Ideas)
Idea 1: Unlocking the Path
Rationale: Focusing on the principle of Unity and Variety, this sketch uses a circular frame of keys to create a literal and symbolic border. The variety of textures from the smooth crystal orbs to the sharp, thorny branches creates a high contrast environment. The central figure acts as an anchor, bringing balance to the otherwise busy, detailed background.
Visual Inspiration: Borrowing the high contrast, noir style sketch style found in dark fantasy, specifically the use of heavy cross hatching to define metallic surfaces.
Idea 2 : Unified Nexus
Rationale: This sketch applies the principle of Emphasis through a strong vertical axis and radial symmetry. The rib-like structures at the top lead the viewer’s gaze down through the serpent-like biotech mesh to the glowing spheres. It creates a "biological blueprint" feel, where every cable and skeletal framework has a specific functional place in the system.
Visual Inspiration: where human forms are integrated into vast, complex industrial structures. inspired from power andre 99.
Idea 3 : The Recursive Mind
Rationale: This design explores the principle of Movement and Rhythm by using chaotic, flowing tendrils that draw the eye toward the central, exposed brain. The composition emphasizes a "nesting" effect, where mechanical and organic parts collide, creating a sense of restless energy. This mimics the frenetic, layered complexity often seen in experimental media design.
Visual Inspiration: Inspired by the intricate biotech-industrial aesthetic and power andre 99.

REFLECTION
Experience
Working on Task 2 was an interesting process because it pushed me to look at the Silica Gel Power Andre 99 album cover in a deeper way rather than only focusing on the colours or vibe. When I received feedback to pay more attention to the actual elements in the design, such as the robotic female face, the mechanical hands, and the industrial background, I realised that I had been analysing quite generally at first. Reworking my visual analysis and sketches helped me understand how these elements carry meaning and how I could use them as inspiration. Experimenting with my own ideas and sketch variations also allowed me to explore different directions while still staying connected to the original artwork.
Observation
Through revisiting the artwork after feedback, I noticed many details that I initially overlooked. The contrast between the white robotic face and the dark industrial background creates a strong focal point that immediately directs the viewer’s gaze. The mechanical hands reaching outward add tension and movement, highlighting the sense of human-machine interaction. The background, filled with machinery, pipes, and sharp geometric textures, contributes to the industrial atmosphere that defines the artwork’s mood. Studying these details helped me better understand how the artist arranged contrast, movement, and emphasis to guide the viewer’s attention and create expression through form and composition.
Findings
From this task, I learned how important it is to fully understand a design before trying to interpret or improve it. The feedback made me realise that visual analysis becomes much stronger when I break down elements based on what I actually see, not what I assume. I also found that focusing on contrast, focal points, and repeated industrial motifs helped me develop more intentional sketches for my ideation. Understanding the symbolic connection between the robotic face, the reaching hands, and the industrial environment allowed me to approach my ideas with a clearer purpose. Overall, this task strengthened my ability to observe, analyse, and create design work with more depth and intention.
